Traditionally a still life is a collection of inanimate objects arranged as a composition.
The arrangements might be as simple as a table with a bowl of fruit or a vase of flowers.
It can hold subjective meaning for the artist, sending a message of fleeting life or
intimate pride.
Still life photography has historically been shot under controlled conditions, indoors - in
one’s home or studio. But it may also be a “found still life” – where one manipulates
objects found out-of-doors. Look for things you live with or walk by that may have an
everyday meaning for you. Catch the light coming in a window or outdoors in the
golden hour. It’s an opportunity to experiment and play. Let your lens savor the angles,
shadows and highlights of objects that become more than just things.
