Wendy Stone has been working as a Documentary Photographer and Photojournalist for thirty years. She lived in Kenya for 23 years, photographing international aid and relief work for non-profit organizations and United Nations agencies. She traveled to 22 countries in Africa on assignments with UNICEF, UNHCR, WFP, UNDP, USAID, the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the World Agroforestry Center. Wendy will be sharing her Africa experiences, stories and images covering her years as a News Photographer in the 1990's to her current work in the non-profit world.
In 2011 her children's book, Beatrice's Dream: A Story of Kibera Slum, was published by Frances Lincoln Children's Books, London. The photo essay’s subject is a 13-year-old orphan living in one of the largest slums in Nairobi, Kenya. The book was nominated for the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) honor list in 2012. The paperback edition was published in 2013 with a new title, Beatrice's Dream: Life in an African Slum.
In the 1990s Wendy worked as a news photographer and covered the Somali War and the war in South Sudan, as well as famines and droughts in Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan. Her photographs were published in Newsweek and Time magazines as well as international newspapers and magazines.
Her photo coverage of the Lost Boys in May 1991 in Nasir, South Sudan, won her recognition. The black and white photographs have been used in numerous documentary films and publications worldwide. She was interviewed on Dateline News, speaking about her experience photographing hundreds of children fleeing the war. These photographs were recently featured in the 2014 Hollywood movie with Reese Witherspoon, "The Good Lie".
