Katherine Newbegin (Portland, Oregon) currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA in Photography from Hunter College (2005) and her undergraduate degree from Yale University where she studied English and Photography (1999). In 2008 she received a DAAD fellowship to live in Berlin and a Tiffany Foundation award (2009). Marie Waltentas Studio Program / Marie Sharpe Foundation (2011). Katherine currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts.
Katherine Newbegin is working on a project photographing the vanishing cinemas of India, as well as numerous video projects centered on the idea vacation as it is translated across many cultures. Her previous projects focus on the legacy of the Soviet occupation in Eastern Europe. She has travelled throughout Moldova, Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Cuba, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Belarus to document “block hotels,” built by the government for the workers of the Soviet Union, and meant for nation building purposes.
