Professional Women Photographers announces a Bushwick Walking/Photography Tour guided by PWP member Meryl Meisler on Saturday, June 23rd.

The group will meet at 10:30am at the Swallow Café at 49 Bogart St, Brooklyn (closest subway stop: Morgan Ave on the L line). We will walk/talk/photograph around Bushwick’s main gallery district,  head up some funky industrial side streets to Bushwick  Avenue, then head back towards 1087 Flushing Avenue to the Loom Kavé for a light lunch and 1:00 p.m.  personal tour / photography chat at Meisler’s exhibit Defying Devastation: Bushwick In The 1980s at The  Living Gallery.

Featuring rubble-strewn acres of destruction, Meisler’s photographs show a neighborhood at rock bottom, and provide a unique historical perspective for the dramatic change that followed: the transformation of Bushwick into a sought-after residential area, a haven for artists and small businesses.

On June 7, 2012, Holland Cotter of the New York Times wrote that Meisler and  writer Vanessa Mártir ”tell the story of Bushwick long before the art wave got there, when, shattered by poverty, racism and civic neglect, it was seen by many as a ruin that would never rise. Now it’s rising, and art is helping it, just as it is helping art by giving its makers a place to go.”
