Volume 5 | Issue 2 | Summer 2010

Greetings from the Board

We hope all of you are having a great summer.  Although we have no monthly meetings scheduled during July and August the board and all the committees have been busy preparing for the 2010-2011 season.  PWP Exhibitions are in planning as are the speakers for each month and IMPRINTS is being set up for press.

We are looking forward to another banner year and want to welcome all of our new members.

35th ANNIVERSARY PWP INTERNATIONAL OPEN CALL

Open to PWP Members and Non-Members – Everyone JOIN IN!!!

PWP’s first open call for entry/fund-raising effort, with a deadline of September 30th, is well underway.  Submissions have come from 19 different states, Canada, the UK and the Netherlands.

Goals for this and future open calls are to both raise money for the organization and raise awareness of PWP in the arts community. We’re happy to report that we have had several inquiries about membership and we have a new member from the Netherlands as a result of the Call.  Last week an arts organization in Korea emailed and asked for permission to post the call on their website.

The Call is open to PWP members as well as non-members and we encourage all of you to submit your entries. It is fun and will help the organization meet its goal.  Jurors Stephen Perloff and Elinor Carucci will award $3000 in prizes.  The Grand Prize winner receives $600 in cash and their image on the cover of the Fall/Winter issue of IMPRINTS magazine.  For details, visit http://www.pwponline.org/calls/individual.php?which=2011-06-01-1

THE ART OF COMMERCE

Art of Commerce Exhibition

October 4 – October 29, 2010

Manhattan Borough President Gallery
1 Centre Street
19th Floor
New York 10007

Commerce is an essential element of our lives. From hot dogs to real estate, the world continuously bustles with transactions big and small. Advertisers blanket the streets and airwaves with images selling goods, ideas, personalities, and ways of living. Whether paying a subway fare or working 9 to 5 at an office, most people contribute to this financial traffic on a daily basis. As a photographer, can you capture commerce in a way that elevates it from the routine?

What are the creative ways in which people do business? How do sellers tempt their customers? How does the exchange of money color interactions between people? What is the psychology behind a sale? Show us the images of commerce that you find evocative, unusual, humorous, and beyond. When artistry, insight and a fresh point of view combine, commerce becomes anything but commonplace.

The Exhibitions Committee has a number of future projects in the works and always welcomes PWP member volunteers. It is a great way to learn about jurying and curating as well as forging great friendships within the organization. SEPTEMBER MONTHLY MEETING

on 9/15/2010

The 2010-2011 PWP Monthly meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month at St. Paul’s Church on West 59th Street.

PLEASE NOTE – because the first Wednesday in September is before Labor day and the second is in conflict with the Jewish Holidays our September meeting will be WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 2010.

We plan another exciting year of guest lecturers and programs so please mark your calendars and make the PWP meeting a priority.

We will kick off the season this year with guest speaker Anja Hitzenberger, a photographer, filmmaker and video artist whose work focuses on the body and its relationship to architecture and space.
Her work has been exhibited in group and one-person shows in New York and throughout Europe, and published internationally in magazines, books and newspapers. She is also currently on the faculty of the International Center of Photography in New York, where she teaches a Personal Vision photography class.
Many PWP members have had the opportunity to attend PWP workshops with Anja where she has challenged us to look at portraiture a little differently.

CURTAIN RAISERS

Each month the PWP meeting opens with a curtain raiser – a PWP member who has the opportunity to show 10 images to the group.  It is a lot of fun and a great way to get your images “out there” with our members and guests as the audience. Our Program Director Ruth Gitto is looking for member curtain raisers for the months of October, November, February and March.  Contact Ruth atprograms@pwponline.org

PWP ONE DAY CONFERENCE

PLANNING IS MOVING AHEAD

There is a great committee in place putting together our first one-day conference called PHOTOGRAPHY: THE STATE OF THE ART. They have done a fantastic job lining up speakers for the conference, planned to coincide with Women’s History Month 2011. The event, which will be open to the public, is scheduled for Saturday, March 26, 2011. The committee is working on an attractive admission price that will be enhanced even more with a PWP member discount. The program at this point includes:

  • keynote speaker Susan Kismaric, Curator, Department of Photography at MoMA;
  • a session on the history of women in photography led by Naomi Rosenblum, author of the classic text, A HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY;
  • a marketing session, “Getting Known/Being Shown” by  Ariel Shanberg, Executive Director of the Center for Photography at Woodstock,
  • a session on creativity for photographers.

We are also planning to present the first “Danny” award (in honor of PWP founder, Danielle Hayes) at the conference. The 2010 award recipient will be photographer Suzanne Opton for for her combination of exceptional creative ability and how she uses that ability to contribute to community consciousness.
Suzanne was a guest speaker at PWP’s February 2010 monthly meeting. She presented striking images from her “Soldiers” project and discussed her career.

To make the conference a reality, PWP needs to offset costs and is seeking sponsors and exhibitors for this unique photography event.  WE NEED YOUR HELP! If you know of any photography-related business that would be interested in receiving a sponsorship solicitation package, please contact Fran Dickson (committee chair) at fdickson@mindspring.com or Terry Berenson atdevelopment@pwponline.org as soon as possible.

RESPONSE TO CUBA TRIP OVERWHELMING

The response to the survey asking for members’ interest in a PWP custom-designed photography trip to Cuba was overwhelmingly positive.  The development committee is moving forward with plans to offer one or two trips of 20 people each in October 2011.  PWP members will be given priority during enrollment and available space will then be made available to non members. In addition there will be a discount for PWP members only.

The tour organizer, a long-time close friend of member Joan Tedeschi, is on the board of an organization that raises money for Cuban artists and has been creating organized cultural tours to Cuba for over eight years. This trip will be within the guidelines of the Federal Government.

Details and pricing will be announced as soon as they are finalized.
